Final year internship: internship experience is the top factor employers weigh, 43 percent of 2026 graduates had an offer before graduating, and internships run one, three or six months
Why the final year matters, from NACE's 2026 surveys, and the lengths our internship form offers.

A final year internship comes at the right time. You have enough skill to do real work, and anything you learn goes straight onto the CV you will send out after graduation.

This guide is for students in the last year of a degree or college course. It covers why an internship counts now, when to apply, how to fit it around exams, and what to send, using our own careers page as the worked example.

Key Takeaways

  • Employers put internship experience first when two candidates are otherwise equal, according to NACE’s Job Outlook 2026.
  • Apply early in the year: more than two in five 2026 graduates held a job offer before graduating.
  • Plan around your exams. Our form asks when you can start and whether you want one, three or six months.
  • Lead with your final year project. It is often the most complete piece of work a student has.

Why Does an Internship in Your Final Year Matter?

Because employers weigh it heavily when you apply for your first job. The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) found that “Employers regard having an internship with their organization or within their industry to be the most influential factors when choosing between two otherwise equally qualified job candidates”.

Those were the only two attributes employers rated as having “very much influence”. An internship in the industry you want to join covers the second, and the first too if that employer later hires.

When Should Final Year Students Apply?

As early in the year as you can. Offers do not wait for graduation day: NACE reports that “More than two out of five new college graduates (43%) had at least one job offer before graduation”.

An internship in the first half of your final year leaves time to finish it, add it to your CV and use it in applications before you graduate. Leave it too late and it competes with exams.

How Do You Fit an Internship Around Exams and a Final Project?

Pick the timing and the length before you apply, then say so. At our agency, student placements are built around your study schedule.

  • Choose a start date after a heavy period. Our form asks when you are available from.
  • Pick a length you can finish. You can ask for one, three or six months; three months can suit a single term or semester.
  • Protect your final project. If it has a deadline, plan the internship around it, not the other way round.

What Should a Final Year Student Send?

Send your strongest finished work, with a note on why you want this area. Our internship application asks for an internship area, a portfolio or website link, your most recent grade, when you can start, how long you want to stay, and a short “Why You?” answer.

  • Lead with your final year project. Say what problem it solved, which part you did and what the result was.
  • Match the work to the area. A WordPress Development applicant should link live sites; a UI/UX Design applicant, the reasoning behind a design.
  • Keep your CV to one clear story. Relevant skills, projects and any course you completed come first.
  • Answer “Why You?” in plain words. Two or three sentences on what you want to learn and why this area.

What Happens After You Apply?

You go through the same six steps as every applicant: the application form, a review, an initial interview, a short assessment, a final interview, and onboarding if you are selected. The assessment is less about what you already know and more about how you work.

We look at attitude, how quickly you pick new things up, how you respond to something you have not seen before, and how you take feedback. Saying you do not know, then showing how you would find out, is a good answer. The full process is in how to get hired at a digital agency.

What If You Missed the Earlier Years?

That is fine. A well-planned internship in your final year still counts.

If you are earlier in your studies and reading this for later, start with getting an internship while you are still studying. If you need to build a portfolio first, our courses are practical sessions built around your schedule.

FAQs

Is It Too Late to Get an Internship in Your Final Year?

No. Employers still count an internship done in your final year when you apply for jobs.

How Long Should a Final Year Internship Be?

Long enough to finish something real, short enough to protect your exams. Our form offers one, three or six months, and three months can fit a single term.

Should You Take an Internship or Focus on Your Final Grades?

Where you can, plan for both. A placement built around your study schedule lets you keep your grades and still graduate with experience.
